Course overview

The course will give a practical guide as to how to make a successful RIPA application including the necessary applications to the Magistrates Court for RIPA approval. It will cover in particular directed surveillance and the use of covert human intelligence sources (CHIS). It will look at the law and the codes of practice that accompany it. It will look in particular at grey areas where it is sometimes difficult to decide if you need a RIPA authority or whether you are able to apply for one – what constitutes private information and intrusive surveillance; the use of CCTV, carrying out surveillance for civil rather than criminal investigations. The course will include detailed consideration of the guidance in the Codes of Practice and work studies.

Suitable audience:

Lawyers and officers such as environmental health officers who deal with criminal investigations.
