Course overview
Mentoring is the passing on of support, guidance and advice. It describes a relationship between two people (mentor and mentee), normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences and is based on mutual trust and respect.
Key characteristics of mentoring:
• It is a supportive form of development.
• It focuses on helping an individual manage their career and improve their skills (legal; developing one’s role; and new skills such as client relationship management).
• Personal issues can be discussed productively (unlike in coaching where the emphasis is on performance at work).
• Mentoring activities have both organisational and individual goals.
