Course overview
How to access and use the best legal research tools so you make sure that you have access to up to date statute, case law and precedents and informed academic discussion of legal issues. The course will look at legal research sites such as Practical Law, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis and Lawtel. We will also look at background free search facilities such as google. Finally we will consider the best academic books on local government and other key areas that local government lawyers will encounter.
Suitable audience:
Solicitors and other legal staff at all levels.

Presenter profiles:
Tony Simmonds, University of Nottingham teaches legal research to all levels of students at the University. In a former role he designed e-learning content and wrote the legal research manual for the (then) College of Law.
Julie Watts – Thomson Reuters:- Julie holds a first class LLB (Hons) law degree, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) and LLM Master of Laws awarded by the University of Derby. Whilst studying at Derby, she worked as a Westlaw Student Representative, training students to use Westlaw UK and Lawtel, before progressing to work for Thomson Reuters as a Customer Trainer for the Academic sector. Julie is currently working for the Strategic Customer Training Team, providing training solutions and product support to Thomson Reuters’ premier clients.
Gavin Allan – Thomson Reuteurs – Gavin holds a Post Graduate Diploma Law degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) from the College of Law. Gavin has worked in legal publishing for 22 years, most recently working for the Regional Training Team at Thomson Reuters. In this role as Customer Trainer Gavin provides training solutions and product support in the Central and North West regions.
