Course overview
A comprehensive and practical introduction to the Coroners court for those lawyers less familiar with the jurisdiction or who might appear as witnesses.
Suitable audience:
Lawyers and other legal staff within public authorities together with social work or other managers who might appear as witnesses in the Coroners Court
Overview and topics to be covered include:
• The Coroners Jurisdiction
• Coroners investigations
• Inquest hearings including Pre Inquest Reviews
• Preparing for court & giving evidence
• Prevent Future Death Reports
• How to approach the proceedings as a public sector organisation

Presenter profiles:
Steve Eccleston is the Assistant Director for Legal Services & Deputy Monitoring Officer for Sheffield Council. He qualified as a solicitor in 1991 in private practice and joined Sheffield City Council in 1992. He was appointed Assistant Director for Legal Services in 2010 and has responsibility for the Social Care, Civil Litigation and Governance teams. Steve has had conduct of various high profile cases over the years including Judicial Reviews into Sheffield’s Council Tax Support Scheme, leisure centre closures, highway tree removal and library reorganisations. He was lead lawyer for Sheffield in the Hillsborough Inquests, in H & L v A Local Authority [2011] regarding information sharing in child protection and in the case of Dillner v SCC [2016] EWHC 945 (Admin) concerning SCC’s highway maintenance and tree replacement programme. Steve sits as an Assistant Coroner in Sheffield and is a trustee of two major Church of England charities.
