Course overview

This interactive session will give delegates access to the essential tools and techniques associated with scoping, planning, implementing and controlling projects and large tasks. It will help delegates to apply these techniques in a very pragmatic way to their roles at work in order to bring energy and focus to large tasks while staying on top of their day jobs.

Suitable audience:

This workshop provides a practical introduction to the key tools and techniques used in project management and their application to managing workloads and multiple priorities.

Suitable audience: It is suitable for any staff, both managerial and non-managerial, who want a better appreciation of core project principles which can be applied as part of an overall approach to time management and personal organisation.

Overview and topics to be covered include:

• What are the key elements of good project management?
• How can we use these principles to plan projects and large tasks of all sizes and complexity at work?
• Why can projects and large tasks fail or get into difficulty and how can we prevent and manage these issues?
• How can projects and large tasks be planned alongside the ongoing expectations and demands associated with the ‘day job’?
• How can good planning inform effective stakeholder management?
• How can project principles be used flexibly to cope with changing priorities and new expectations?
• How can we stay on track of delivery?

Interactive elements

Interactive methods on this course will include:

• Small groups work enabling delegates to use project planning tools to help them to define, scope and schedule real workplace initiatives.
• Case studies and scenarios in which teams will consider how to use key project principles to manage stakeholder expectations, keep on top of multiple and changing priorities and ensure effective delivery.

Presenter profiles:

Kevin Sutcliffe is an experienced manager and consultant who has worked with a range of learners at all levels in diverse industry sectors. These include many law firms and local authorities in addition to sectors such as financial services, health and social care and engineering. He has managed projects, coached project managers and helped many project teams plan, implement and close projects. He has a particular interest in helping a wide range of learners take the core principles of project management and apply them in pragmatic ways to their own workload management.
