Seminar overview

An introduction to RIPA that will give you a working knowledge of its provisions.  The course will look the main statutory provisions, the levels of authorisation required and the process for seeking approval by the Magistrates.   It will consider the Home Office guidance, Article 8 of the Human Rights Act and relevant case law.  Work studies will also be provided.

Duration: Half a day (3 CPD points) including lunch

Speaker Profile: 

John Riddell is the head of the police and local government team at Weightmans. He has advised the police and local authorities on RIPA issues and defamation issues over a number of years. He was one of only a handful of lawyers nationally to be given a star rating in Chambers Guide to the Law 2014.

Olwen Dutton leads Bevan Brittan’s local authority governance team. She has extensive experience at a senior level working in house in local government and also in the Audit Commission. Before joining Bevan Brittan Olwen was Chief Executive of the West Midlands LGA. She is a non-executive director of a large Acute NHS Heath Trust in the Midlands and brings her knowledge of the health service to her role leading Bevan Brittan’s work on health and social care. She also advises local authorities on governance, standards, constitutional arrangements and vires.
