Course overview

This interactive session will give delegates the opportunity to reflect on their current approaches to communicating with and influencing others, explore ways of broadening their range of influencing styles and consider how to apply a range of practical interpersonal skills to situations involving negotiating with and persuading others.

Suitable audience:

This workshop introduces the key elements and skills associated with influencing and negotiation in the workplace.

Suitable audience: It is suitable for professional staff and those in leadership and management positions who need to be persuasive, confident and influential when working with a range of stakeholders both inside and outside the organisation.

Overview and topics to be covered include:

• What gives us the confidence and authority to be influential?
• What are the merits and applications of different influencing styles and strategies?
• How can I broaden my range of influencing styles?
• What do we mean by ‘push’ and ‘pull’ influencing styles?
• How can I increase my choice of influencing styles in conflict or disagreement situations?
• What are the stages of an effective negotiation?
• What essential preparation do I need to undertake before negotiating?
• What is ‘stakeholder management’ and how can I become better at managing stakeholder expectations?
• How do I establish my negotiating position?
• How can I push towards a ‘win/win’ outcome?

Interactive elements

Interactive methods on this course will include;-
• The opportunity for delegates to identify their own influencing styles and their associated strengths and blind spots through self-reflection and the use of established questionnaires.
• The use of case studies to consider the use of different influencing and negotiating styles in action.
• Small group discussion and co-coaching enabling delegates to explore how a range of practical interpersonal skills can be applied to their own scenarios in the workplace.

Duration: Half a day (3 training hours) including lunch

Comments: The session will include self-reflection on the nature and impact of personal communication styles and how these can be adapted to best effect at work.

Presenter profiles:

Kevin Sutcliffe is an experienced manager, consultant and coach who has worked with a range of learners at all levels in diverse industry sectors. These include many law firms and local authorities in addition to sectors such as financial services, health and social care and engineering.
