Course overview

This course will provide attendees with an overview of employment law developments over the past 12 months or so, including important cases, a legislation update and a look forward to upcoming developments. The course will also include a specific focus on terminating contracts of employment, using protected conversations and the use of confidentiality provisions in settlement agreements.

Presenter profiles:

Helen Snow, Senior Associate, Geldards is an experienced employment lawyer, specialising in all aspects of employment law, HR Issues and general employment know how. Helen has been advising public, private and third sector employers on all aspects of employment law since qualifying with the firm in 2005. She consistently deals with unfair dismissal and discrimination claims as well as more complex contentious issues including whistleblowing, transfer of undertakings and equal pay.

Helen’s expertise also covers dealing with industrial relations issues, the implementation and revision of workplace polices, the variation of terms and conditions of employment and collective redundancies.

As the practice support lawyer for the employment team Helen is also responsible for the firm’s employment training programme. She writes employment law articles including newsletters, e-bulletins and client updates and provides the employment law content for the firm’s sector bulletins. She regularly speaks at external events and conferences for organisations including ACAS, CIPD and Welsh Government.

Victoria Duddles, Weightmans, is an Associate in the Employment team and has over 20 years’ experience advising on all aspects of employment law both within the private and public sector including a period of secondment into a public sector organisation. She regularly advises on contractual issues, unfair dismissal claims, discrimination matters, TUPE and redundancy situation as well as representing clients at Employment Tribunal. Victoria regularly provides training to organisations on a wide range of employment law issues. As well as being a qualified solicitor Victoria is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and sits on the Birmingham CIPD branch as Policy Advisor. She is also member of Birmingham Law Society’s Employment Law Committee.

Paul Bownes, Weightmans specialised in employment law prior to his qualification as a solicitor and has carried this on since qualification. He is an experienced advocate, appearing in employment matters in the Employment Tribunal, Employment Appeal Tribunal and County Court across the country. He deals with the full range of contentious and non-contentious matters for the public, private and charitable sectors. Paul provides day to day advice and support for HR and ER matters as well as assisting with and running larger transformation projects such as collective redundancies and TUPE transfers. His recent advice for local authorities includes contentious TUPE insourcing, consideration of how to deal with potential whistleblowing issues and how best to protect the authority, concerns surrounding a monitoring officer and data protection procedures. He also assists local authorities in defending Tribunal claims, both representing them at hearings and managing the case throughout. Paul is experienced in sitting as a legal advisor to disciplinary panels and also regularly provides training to clients in legal developments and best practice.
