Course overview

This will be a practical session looking at the renewal and termination of leases under Part II of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 to include:

• What does the Act apply to?
• The renewal/termination procedure
• What happens when the parties cannot agree terms of a renewal?
• Interim rent applications, and
• Grounds of opposition to new tenancies

Suitable audience:

Lawyers, Property Managers and anyone involved in the renewal and termination of leases for local authorities

Presenter profiles:

Paul Tomkins, Freeths is an experienced property litigator who acts for a wide range of public sector clients. He regularly advises on matters such as contested and uncontested lease renewals, disputed break clauses, dilapidations claims, contested rent reviews, covenant/easement matters, possession claims and disputes relating to the development of land. Paul is ranked as a Leader in the Field by Chambers and Partners and is a Recommended Lawyer in The Legal 500.

Maxine is an Associate in the Real Estate team with 9 years’ experience on a broad range of matters with an emphasis on advising local authorities. She regularly advises on agreements for lease, taking and granting leases, under leases, building leases, academy leases and other occupational tenancies. Some of the more complex transactions involve options, pre-emptions and clawback provisions. Maxine also undertakes some portfolio management work such as licences for works and assignment and surrender of leases acting for both landlords and tenants.
