Suitable audience:

LA Lawyers, education managers, school governors, Providers of FM services via LA trading units


This course will cover the latest issues related to practice and legalities involved in academy conversion / merger.

Topics to be covered include:

• Practical Issues – what information provision is needed enabling Commercial Transfer Agreements, Leases and Funding Agreements to be entered into.
• Information – the extent to which local authorities are able to provide / warrant information.
• PFI Schools and conversion – role of local authority and other parties.
• Multi-Academy Trusts – alternative structures, particular issues related to structures and decision-making within MATs.
• Merger of existing academies into Multi-Academy Trusts – legal requirements and practical safeguards. What is the role of the local authority?
• Ongoing legal relationships between the Academy Trust / Local Authority and third parties – eg local authorities as service providers.

Presenter profiles:

Stephen Pearson is Head of Freeths Education Group. He has acted on a number of academy conversions and complex contractual outsourcing arrangements for a variety of schools, FE and HE institutions. He is a member of the Procurement Lawyers Association and specialises in advising in connection with complex contractual relationships.
